A volcano can seem quiet for a long time. Beneath the surface, the earth is constantly in motion. Pressure builds up, and lava slowly seeks a way out. Until everything starts to move. From this powerful image, L.A.V.A. was born, the new dance performance by Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten from Amsterdam and Roberto Zappalà from Catania, the Sicilian city at the foot of Mount Etna.
A volcanic landscape on stage
On an almost empty stage, a large circle of light hangs, like a crater above the dancers. Smoke drifts through the space. Twelve dancers appear in two groups: one in fiery shades of red and orange, the other in green. Between them move two mysterious figures in silver heat suits, inspired by the famous volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft. The two groups initially move from very different energies. One low to the ground, propelled like a lava flow; the other rising up and outward. Slowly, they come closer together. They collide, react to each other, and throw each other's movements off balance. Eventually, the red and green costumes also disappear, leaving only the (almost) naked bodies themselves.
An eruption of dance and sound
The music and sound design by Salvador Breed make that world almost tangible. Underground rumblings, voices, electronic sounds, and heavy rhythms move through the space. The breathing, cries, and rhythmic counting of the dancers also become part of the music. Light, sound, and movement continuously heighten the built-up tension until it releases in a collective eruption.

Book an introduction
During the introduction, production leader Milou Smit takes the audience into ICK as a company and gives an insight into the performance L.A.V.A.. Afterwards, she will have a conversation with rehearsal director Nico Monaco. He shares stories from behind the scenes, tells more about the rehearsal process, and discusses working from the unique dance method of choreographers Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten, Double Skin / Double Mind (DS/DM). Finally, there will be time for questions from the audience.

Over ICK Dans Amsterdam
Emio Greco (Italië) en Pieter C. Scholten (Nederland) werken sinds 1995 samen en hebben in meer dan drie decennia een veelzijdig en internationaal erkend oeuvre opgebouwd dat zich uitstrekt van hedendaagse dans tot opera, theater, muziek en film. Sinds 1996 maakt het choreografenduo intens fysieke dansvoorstellingen waarin het intuïtieve, nieuwsgierige lichaam centraal staat — een lichaam in opstand ook, dat zich niet laat voegen naar opgelegde dansvormen, maar zichzelf tot maat verheft in haar beweging door tijd, ruimte en vorm. Met dit compromisloze vertrekpunt ontwikkelde het gezelschap een eigenzinnig bewegingsvocabulaire, dat al vroeg werd vastgelegd in hun artistieke manifest Les Sept Nécessités (1996). Voor hun uitzonderlijke bijdrage aan de Nederlandse dans ontvingen Greco en Scholten in 2021 de VSCD Gouden Zwaan oever prijs.
Over Roberto Zappalà
Roberto Zappalà is artistiek directeur en choreograaf van het gelijknamige Zappalà Danza Company, dat hij in 1990 op Sicilië oprichtte. Voor dit gezelschap creëerde hij meer dan 85 werken, waaronder de veelbekroonde producties A.semu tutti devoti tutti? en La Nona. Hij ontwikkelde een eigen choreografische taal, MoDem genaamd, en schreef het boek Omnia Corporas over zijn methode. Zappalà richtte tevens Scenario Pubblico op, het eerste internationale choreografische centrum van Italië. Voor zijn oeuvre ontving hij in 2024 een Lifetime Achievement Award.
