Following Anima Obscura, choreographer Nanine Linning and her international artistic team present a new large-scale, multidisciplinary work. La Mer is a visually rich and emotionally charged performance exploring both the beauty and vulnerability of the world’s oceans, inspired by Claude Debussy’s iconic La Mer (1905) and his choral work Sirènes.
Between romanticism and reality
With 25 dancers, Linning contrasts the early 20th-century romantic imagination of the sea with today’s reality shaped by climate change, rising sea levels and pollution. The performance invites reflection on the relationship between humans and nature, raising questions about responsibility and action.
A fusion of artistic disciplines
The cinematic compositions by Yannis Kyriakides offer a contemporary counterpoint to Debussy’s music and are written for soprano Barbara Hannigan. Recordings from the deep sea reveal a surprisingly vibrant underwater world. The digital scenography by Heleen Blanken and over eighty sustainable costumes by designer Yuima Nakazato transform the stage into a fluid, immersive environment where beauty and threat coexist.
La Mer is a layered total experience in which dance, music, fashion and visual art converge, engaging audiences both physically and intellectually.
